Laure.
Laure was born in France in 1960. Throughout her childhood she was exposed to and influenced by an artistic environment. This encouraged her, at the age of 10, to frequent the Montparnasse artist studios, in Paris.
In 1993, she joined an artistic group linked to a studio which was dedicated to working from live models. It was here that she started to form her technique and the ability to "see". She developed her understanding and appreciation of the four dimensions of a portrait – concept, colour, composition and use of different mediums. This offered her an invaluable apprenticeship in working from live models and working on canvas.
She then moved to a second artistic group and studio, which focused on drawing, again from live models. Here she developed the discipline of drawing, expressing space, and the human form in two dimensions – the study of lines, values, perspective, and composition. Her work covered many dimensions of her art – watercolour, oils, pastels, quick sketches, longer poses.
In 2009 she started started her training in classical drawing with the summer school of the Florence Academy of Art, and she continues this course in 2010 and 2011. At the Florence Academy of Art, skill in drawing is considered fundamental to perfection in painting, sculpture, or other art forms. This training has strengthened her visual relationship with three dimensional form, and enabled her to identify properly the human form and express it accurately.
"I have learnt to use the "sight-size" method of measurement used by classical artists, and trained my eye to view the model accurately and reproduce it faithfully."
Throughout this training she worked from casts, aswell as the human figure, always focusing on accuracy – of outlines, of proportions, and of shapes and shadows.
Since 2009 her training and her work has been dedicated to portraits from live models. She works in charcoal, on commissions, and, exclusively from live sittings. She does not believe it is possible to capture the essence of an individual by working from a photograph.
